"How many caped crusaders does it take to change a lightbulb?"
"None... they like the dark..."

And so begins BLACKEST NIGHT... well not really, but it's as good a place as any to start this review. I've really enjoyed the whole spectrum Corps storylines as they've been unfolding over the last few years in GL and GL CORPS, so here, the final confrontation between the Black Lanterns and the various Corps, plus a smattering of Earth's Finest, dead and alive, should have been the veritable psychedelic fireworks that finished it all off in style. Instead I was left a little bit deflated, much like torrential rain on Bonfire Night. I don't know, I think once you move into the full 'throwing the kitchen sink at it mode' in true 'well I wonder just how many tie-ins the suckers will buy style', it just all gets, well, boring. I'm still not totally clear on how everything got resolved, and in all honesty by the end of this volume, I wasn't actually that bothered. I'm hoping the BRIGHTEST DAY individual single character driven stories following this 'event' will get back to the excellent story-telling that Johns was pulling out month on month in GREEN LANTERN.
