Detective Tony Chu has a taste for crime. If he eats something he's bombarded with psychic impressions of the food-stuff's history - a bit disconcerting since the last thing most meal's constituent parts bear witness to is their own demise. A bit disconcerting for Tony too when his boss insists on a savoury shortcut to solving each murder: to chow down on the corpse.

The first volume played with this concept quite expansively with variations on a theme, and there's still a certain humour to be had from the wisely unspoken joke each consecutive time that Chu is confronted by his next inevitable self-sacrifice. Here Chu sets out on own in search of a new fruit that tastes just like chicken. Chicken has been outlawed since Bird Flu, so it's quite the commodity and an entire island is hedging its economy's success on their monopoly when it comes to the not-so-forbidden fruit. Their leader is prepared to hire or even abduct the finest of chefs in the world to this end, including one who can communicate through food, interpreting, say, a Shakespearian tragedy through a three-course meal. Holding onto these chefs, though, may prove more difficult on account of the revolting natives.

My favourite sequence involved an impending cliffhanger getting bigger each panel (Layman does know when to signpost and when to leave well enough alone - here it's signposted to great effect), and there are indeed a fair few chortles throughout. Just wish there was a little less space between them.
